ABOUT US
We are Chris and Rico, and this is our blog. It’s a work in progress, so bear with us as we gradually fill it with stories, tips and top picks from our combined 20+ years of travel adventures.
Our story together started in 2014 at a small outdoor music festival in the capital of Eswatini (at the time known as Swaziland). Rico was in his first year as a Peace Corps volunteer, living and working in a small rural community. In contrast, Chris was working as a dentist at a private clinic in the capital. We hit it off straight away, our shared passion for travel forming a core part of our relationship from the start. We explored every corner of Eswatini, with forays into neighbouring countries for weekend safari trips and beach-front getaways.
A year later, life took us back to our home countries, Rico to the U.S., and Chris to the U.K., clocking up the air miles with a long-distance transatlantic relationship. Time off work, for Chris, or away from studies, for Rico, was precious. We spent it reconnecting and traveling in our own countries and around the globe.
About us moving to New Zealand
Finally, in 2017, we moved together to the other side of the world to settle in the land of the long white cloud, Aotearoa-New Zealand. Four years later, covid has again kept us locked down in our Auckland home for weeks on end. And the thing we’ve vaguely talked about on and off over the years is starting to take shape. Our travel blog. Though most of the URLs were already taken at this point (I mean, it’s 2022), we settled on a name that fits our style: Travel Obscure. Because, well, that’s just how we travel. Backpacking and traveling to lesser-known places is sort of our thing. So here it is, our blog, with tales of travels to off-the-beaten-track destinations, stories about us, and some travel tips we’ve learnt along the way.
So take a look! We love to share where we have been and how we got there. We aim to be practical and accessible; let us know if you have any questions or thoughts. And most importantly, enjoy!
