There is only one place where you can get a SIM card in Kosrae
How to Get a SIM Card in Kosrae, Micronesia
Kosrae is the smallest of the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It was the first of the four we entered while island-hopping through Oceania, so we decided to get a SIM card in Kosrae.
Thankfully, all four states in FSM use the FSM Telecommunications Corporation, and you can buy a SIM card in one state to use for the whole of FSM.
Where can you buy a SIM card in Kosrae?
The only place to get a SIM card in Kosrae is at the FSM Telecommunications Corporation branch in Tofol, Kosrae’s tiny capital. The building is dilapidated, and appeared empty when we arrived. The security guard, who was asleep when we turned up, can find someone to serve you.
There is nowhere to buy a SIM card at the Kosrae airport.

Options for a SIM card in Kosrae
The SIM card itself costs USD 10. You then need to purchase one of the FSM Telecommunications Corporation’s mobile plans.
FSM Telecommunications Corporation data, voice and SMS plans you can load on your SIM card in Kosrae
There are only a handful of voice and data options in FSM, and the FSM Telecommunications Corporation tends to lean towards 5-day plans. This would be perfect for a shorter stay, however we had planned to be in FSM for about three weeks. Luckily, our visit coincided with the corporation’s 40th anniversary, and they had a monthly deal running to celebrate.
It is worth noting that the FSM Telecommunication Corporation’s weekly packages are valid for only 5 days and include either voice or data, but not both.
We confirmed that you can also hotspot from your mobile device.

Getting a SIM card in Kosrae is worthwhile
Due to our extended stay in FSM and our plan to visit all four states, we decided to get a monthly plan. Customer service in FSM is generally poor, and we found it was usually necessary to call to book accommodation or tours.
Having a SIM card definitely saved us money, as we were able to book some of the cheaper accommodations that weren’t bookable online.
