Flora Hut Outside Front Night Kahurangi National Park Department of Conservation Huts

Department of Conservation Huts,
New Zealand

Hands down one of the best things about New Zealand for any hiking enthusiast is its extensive network of Department of Conservation Huts. With roughly 1,400 of these backcountry huts spread across New Zealand’s protected areas, and connected by a web of trails, the possibilities for exploration are endless.
Department of Conservation Huts range from the brand-spanking-new flushing toilet and picture window type to the holes-in-the-walls old hermit’s cottage with water from a stream, from an 80-bunk behemoth with BBQs to two-person dog kennel style bivvys, and everything in between.
They come heated, and unheated, with toilets, or without (spade usually provided to dig a hole), some have the most spectacular views, others are dark and damp, but they always provide some shelter for the night, and often top-notch company to boot.

Prices of Department of Conservation Huts

The prices for the Department of Conservation Huts range from the most basic, free types (usually with stream water and often no toilet) to the expensive (especially for non-New Zealand residents) Great Walk huts. Most of the huts are operated on a first come, first served basis, so it’s a good idea to bring a tent just in case.
The more popular huts often need to be booked in advance, and those on some of the great walks sell out faster than a Beyonce concert. The Department of Conservation website has some basic information on each hut in the network, including price and bookings. And we have plenty more information on the huts we’ve featured here.
