Rogers Hut,
Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park

Sitting just inside the boundary of Te Urewera, Rogers Hut had been slated for demolition until recent legal battles put a stop to this (albeit possibly only temporarily). Hopefully, the demolition halt will become more permanent because this hut is seriously full of charm.
The hut was built from slab beech in 1952. Its aged interior is adorned with 70+ years of engraved tin lids and finished off with a triangular stained-glass window, which lights up the interior from above the three-tier bunks.
Rogers Hut sleeps six and has a wood burner for heating, a two-sided verandah with an outdoor sink, and a long drop toilet.
Staying at Rogers Hut costs $10, and you must purchase a standard hut ticket before you go.
