Upper Gridiron Hut,
Kahurangi National Park

This has to be one of the most unique huts in the DOC network. Upper Gridiron Hut is built into an overhanging rock wall, the bare rock forming half of the hut roof. It’s a tiny hut, with three bunks and a small wood burner. Outside, there’s a large swing seat and firepit under the rocky overhang, which is a great place to relax for an afternoon. Of course, there’s the usual outdoor sink and long-drop toilet.
It costs $5 to stay at Upper Gridiron Hut, and you’ll need to purchase a standard hut ticket before you go.
