Sitting at the top of the Travers Valley, just below the treeline and surrounded by rocky peaks, Upper Travers Hut has expansive views across an alpine meadow to the mountains beyond. Bright and modern, the hut has a large kitchen area with a wood burner and two bunk rooms, sleeping 24 people in total.
There’s a wood store outside (although when we visited, the wood had been delivered in massive logs, which were almost impossible to cut) and a couple of long-drop toilets (close to overflowing when we stayed). Camping is available below the hut.
Staying at Upper Travers Hut will cost $25, and you’ll need to purchase a serviced hut ticket before you go.
